Dr. George J. Loftus III used a very strong dental adhesive when cementing your dental crown in place at Syringa Dental and Implants. While it is intended to bond the crown to the abutment for many years to come, there are still some situations that can compromise the connection. This often comes in the form of bacterial complications from chronic gum disease or some form of oral trauma such as a hard fall or blow to the face.
Sometimes the problem can be so severe that it causes the crown to fall off the abutment that is anchoring it in your mouth. In an extreme case, the dentin pillar of the abutment might even fracture the root of the tooth.
The first thing to do is look in a mirror to assess the severity of the problem. If it’s a merely that the cement was compromised, the abutment should be whole and the crown itself should be hollow.
If an oral trauma or dental accident has left blood or other debris in your mouth, you can gently rinse it away with lukewarm saltwater. Otherwise, you shouldn’t attempt to brush or clean any of the exposed abutment or the crown. This could potentially cause damage and further complications.
If a blow caused the abutment to break off at the gumline, you should see it inside the crown. In a case like this, Dr. George J. Loftus III might have to perform a root canal. This will restore sufficient structure to anchor a new crown.
Sometimes bacteria resulting from chronic gum disease can infiltrate the seam between the abutment and the crown. This can gradually weaken the cement that is anchoring the crown to the abutment. If this has caused the crown to fall out, you should be able to see some of the abutment sticking out from your gums. The crown itself should also be completely hollow.
If the crown is undamaged, Dr. George J. Loftus III might be able to clean it and cement it back onto the healthy abutment. In some cases, he might have to fit you for a completely new crown.
